1. File reading: Your .docx file is read into browser memory via the FileReader API as an ArrayBuffer. No network request occurs at any point.
2. DOCX parsing: Mammoth.js unzips the .docx (which is a ZIP archive) and parses the word/document.xml file inside, reading all paragraph runs, formatting properties, and style references.
3. HTML conversion: The parsed content is converted to structured HTML, with headings mapped to <h1>–<h6> tags, bold text to <strong>, italic to <em>, and paragraphs to <p> elements.
4. Content tokenization: The HTML is parsed into a list of content blocks — paragraphs, headings, lists — with their associated font size, weight, and style properties determined by your output settings.
5. PDF page assembly: jsPDF creates a new document at your selected page size and orientation. Content blocks are added line by line, with automatic page breaks when content reaches the page bottom.
6. Download: The completed PDF is serialized, wrapped in a Blob, and offered as a browser download. The entire PDF exists only in your device’s RAM until you save it.

Tips for the Best Conversion Results

• Use .docx format: The modern .docx format is an XML-based ZIP archive that Mammoth.js can fully parse. Older .doc files use a legacy binary format with more limited support. If you have a .doc file, save it as .docx in Word first for best results.
• Use built-in Word styles: Documents that use Word’s built-in Heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) convert with proper heading hierarchy in the output PDF. Documents where headings were manually formatted with bold+large text may not be distinguished from body text.
• Match page size to your document: If your Word document was designed for A4 paper, select A4 in the settings. If it was designed for US Letter, select Letter. Mismatched page sizes can cause text to be cut off at page edges.
• For dense documents, increase margins: Wide margins create more generous whitespace that improves readability of text-heavy academic or legal documents. Tight margins are appropriate for content-packed business documents where space efficiency is important.
• 12pt font for reading, 11pt for printing: 11pt is the standard for printed documents because it saves paper. 12pt is more comfortable for on-screen reading and for recipients who may have difficulty with small text.
• If the output looks empty: This usually means the .docx file had no extractable text — possibly because it was created from a scanned image or protected document. Try re-saving from Word as a fresh .docx.

Word to PDF vs. Other Conversion Methods

• Microsoft Word Export (highest quality): File → Export → Create PDF/XPS in Microsoft Word produces the most accurate output because Word uses its own rendering engine. This preserves images, exact layout, and all formatting perfectly. Requires having Word installed.
• This browser tool (best for privacy): Zero upload, zero installation, works on any device. Best for text-heavy documents where exact layout reproduction is less critical than privacy and convenience.
• Google Docs (good compromise): Upload to Google Docs, then File → Download → PDF Document. Preserves more formatting than browser tools but requires uploading to Google’s servers.
• LibreOffice (free desktop alternative): LibreOffice can open .docx files and export excellent PDFs. Free, open-source, and runs locally. Best desktop alternative if you need high-fidelity PDF without Microsoft Office.
• Print to PDF (universal fallback): Any application can print to PDF using the system’s built-in PDF printer. Quality varies but works as a last resort on any operating system.
